Modelling in Kerala: Where the Work Is
Kerala does not have a single industry city the way Chennai or Hyderabad does. The work is spread along the state, and the categories it buys are genuinely its own.
My family roots are in Kerala, though I work out of Pondicherry, and the Kerala market is one I am asked about often by people who assume it must work like Tamil Nadu's. It does not.
Kerala's modelling economy is unusual in two ways. It is distributed across several cities rather than concentrated in one, and the categories that dominate it, gold, tourism and a distinctive film industry, are not the ones that dominate elsewhere in the south.
A state, not a city
If you ask where the modelling work is in Kerala, there is no single answer, and that shapes how a career here has to be built.
Kochi functions as the commercial and creative hub, and is where the largest concentration of agencies, studios, photographers and production work sits. Thiruvananthapuram carries government, institutional and a share of film-related work. Kozhikode and Thrissur are significant commercial centres, particularly for the retail and jewellery trade.
The practical consequence is travel. A model working in Kerala moves along the state far more than a model in Chennai moves around Chennai. If you are serious here, base yourself near Kochi if you can, and be genuinely willing to travel for shoots.
Gold and jewellery: the category that defines this market
If you understand one thing about commercial modelling in Kerala, make it this. Gold and jewellery advertising is an enormous category in this state, and several of India's largest jewellery retail chains grew out of Kerala before expanding nationally.
That translates into a steady, recurring demand for faces: print campaigns, television commercials, in-store imagery and catalogue work, intensifying around wedding and festival seasons.
This work rewards a specific set of qualities. You need to wear traditional clothing and heavy jewellery convincingly, hold a warm and approachable expression rather than a severe editorial one, and have the patience for long days under weight and lights. If that describes you, you are employable here regardless of whether you fit an international fashion template.
Tourism, resorts and wellness
This is the category genuinely unique to Kerala, and it is persistently underrated by models starting out.
Kerala's tourism economy, its resorts, backwater properties, hotels and the large ayurveda and wellness sector, generates a continuous need for lifestyle imagery: people relaxing, treatments in progress, couples at properties, wellness and spa settings.
The look required is natural, healthy, relaxed and unposed. Often the brief is to appear not to be modelling at all. It is less glamorous than campaign work and considerably more available, and for many models in this state it is the reliable base the rest of the career sits on.
It also tends to favour people who look comfortable and credible rather than striking, which makes it an unusually accessible entry point.
Malayalam cinema works differently
Malayalam cinema has a strong reputation for realism and for content-led, performance-driven films, and that reputation has real consequences for anyone hoping to appear in one.
The casting tends to favour people who look like people. Naturalistic faces, ordinary appearances and credible presence are often preferred over conventionally glamorous looks. For a model who does not fit a polished commercial mould, this can be an advantage rather than an obstacle.
It also means acting ability matters relatively more and portfolio gloss matters relatively less. If screen work here interests you, invest in acting training and in getting real footage of yourself performing, rather than in a more expensive portfolio shoot. Building a believable character and audition tips that work are the more useful places to put your effort.
Language and audience
Malayalam is the working language, and it matters for screen work and for regional campaigns with dialogue. English is widely used in professional settings, which makes Kerala relatively approachable for someone arriving from outside.
One factor specific to this state is worth understanding: a significant share of Kerala's advertising speaks to families with relatives working abroad, particularly in the Gulf. A noticeable amount of campaign work, especially jewellery and wedding-related, is shaped by that audience. It affects the tone briefs ask for, which tends toward the aspirational and family-centred rather than the edgy.
How to find work here
- Agencies and studios in Kochi, which serve most of the state's commercial clients.
- Photographers, who in a distributed market like this are often the single most useful contacts you can have.
- Resorts, hotels and wellness properties, which can be approached directly and frequently commission their own imagery.
- Jewellery and textile retailers, directly or through the agencies that handle their campaigns.
- Wedding photographers, a large industry here with regular need for promotional shoots.
Direct approaches work better in Kerala than in a market like Chennai, because the industry is smaller and less intermediated. A polite message with three or four strong images and your location will reach an actual decision-maker more often than you would expect.
The usual caution applies without modification: you are paid for your work, you never pay for access. The scam warning signs are identical here.
Practical realities
Two things shape the working year here more than people expect.
The first is the monsoon. Kerala gets a long and heavy rainy season, and it genuinely affects outdoor shooting schedules. Work clusters outside it, and the drier months are correspondingly busier. Plan your income around that rhythm rather than being surprised by it.
The second is the distributed geography already mentioned. Travel is a real cost in both time and money. Build it into what you charge and what you accept, and keep your availability honest, because a model who repeatedly cannot travel stops being called.
If you are starting from a smaller town anywhere in the south, becoming a model in Pondicherry sets out how to build a portfolio and working habits cheaply before committing to a bigger market, and modelling in Tamil Nadu covers the neighbouring market many Kerala-based models also work in.
